Matt Komer is another of Los Al’s many athletes who have attained high-level success in multiple sports.

As a basketball player he is the only Griffin to twice be a League Player of the Year — sharing the Sunset League POY honors in 1997 with Ricardo Garibay and winning it solo in 1998. Los Al won the Sunset League title in both years.

He is also one of Los Al’s top volleyball players, being the first Griffin to earn a spot on a national team — with his selection to the Jr. National team in 1997. He passed on basketball scholarship offers to play volleyball at UCLA where he played on the 2000 national championship team and earned 2nd team All-American honors in 2002.

After a year playing volleyball in Europe, he returned to the United States to get a real job, and to get married to his UCLA sweetheart Jamie Hipp, who was a goalie on the three NCAA water polo champions as well as the 2008 US National Water Polo team. They currently live in Rossmoor and are the parents of one year old Kove.
