Richard Harbour, iconic surfboard maker, passes at 77
Courtesy of the Harbour family – Seal Beach businessman and surfboard legend Rich Harbour died last Sunday, July 11. The family issued a statement announcing the sad news Monday, July 12. Harbour was a surfing industry legend. “It is with a heavy heart, we announce the passing of legendary Seal Beach shaper Richard Harbour, at his home surrounded by Family the evening of July 11,” according to a statement issued by the family. Seal Beach’s miniature libraries offer used books for free
Free, used books are available at various locations in Old Town. For-profit used bookstores are few nowadays. The Mary Wilson Friends of the Library bookstore hasn’t reopened yet. So where’s a book lover to go when they need something to read and don’t want to spend money online? (Or they want to inhale the fragrance of an old book?) Where do you drop off a book you no longer have room for? A few mini-libraries, both formal and informal, dot the local landscape, providing a resource for acquiring or discarding a physical book. Lifeguard publishes book about the job
In a career as a lifeguard that has spanned more than five decades, Ed Vodrazka, has seen just about everything. On his way out the door to semi-retirement, Vodrazka wanted to give a shout out to the men and women he has worked alongside for so many years. He wanted to tell their stories, share their acts of courage and bravery with the world. He also wanted to entertain with some of the lighter moments on a job that can require risking ones life at any moment. Exciting times around the station this week! We’ve hired two new police aides. For those of you unfamiliar with law enforcement, our partners are much more than just coworkers. Many of us risk our lives each and every day to protect the community and each other. When you trust your life to your partner, you quickly become family. Plus, sometimes we spend more time with our work family than at home with our actual family. Police work is a 24/7 operation and that means that many of us have to work on birthdays and holidays. It is a sacrifice we’re willing to make to be part of such a great organization.
