It wasn’t pretty and they need a bit of luck, but the Los Al Griffins overcame the loss of five starters and held on to defeat Westlake 19-14 in a first-round CIF Division 2 Football playoff match Friday night Cerritos College.
Los Al now advances to a second round match up at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame which outlasted La Habra 41-38 in their meeting.
A combination of injuries and players forced to sit out after being ejected last week in the Sunset League finale against Edison prompted Coach Ray Felton to use quarterbacks Cade McConnell, Ryan Henderson and Zack Wagoner in various roles against Westlake.
McConnell and Henderson split time in the first half before Wagoner played the entire second half, using his running abilities to rally Los Alamitos from a 14-10 deficit.
The Griffins (9-1-1) scored the go-ahead touchdown with 9:08 left in the game.
Michael-Allen Reddy led another tough defensive showing, finishing with three sacks and an interception.
