Although it wasn’t the most impressive win, the Los Alamitos Griffins 25-6 win over La Serna last Friday showed enough grit and depth to overcome its own penalties and boost the team in the local high school football rankings.

Los Al moved up one spot to No. 2 in the Press-Telegram’s Top 25 Long Beach area rankings. The Griffins are behind No. 1 St. John Bosco.

Los Al also move up one notch in the LA Times SoCal Top 25 rankings, checking in at No. 7 this week. .

In the OC Register’s Top 25 OC teams, the Griffins stayed at No. 4, behind Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran and Mission Viejo. Sunset League rivals Edison, Corona Del Mar, Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach check in at No. 8, 9, 15 and 25, respectively.

Los Al hosts Timpview of Provo, Utah on Friday at 8pm. The Thunderbirds are 14 times Utah state champions and narrowly missed their 15th last season, coming up just short to rival Lehi in the state championship game.

The game will be played at Los Alamitos HS, which is normally considered too small to host a Varsity crowd. But since Timpview is in Utah, Los Al officials assumed there would not be much of a fan base traveling with them. The game will be preceded by a Girls Flag Football contest. Flag Football is now an official CIF-sanctioned sport.
