The Los Alamitos High School advanced mixed choir, Sound FX, performed on stage with Barry Manilow and the LA Philharmonic recently at the Hollywood Bowl. The nine-time national champion choir, under the direction of Assistant Principal David Moellenkamp and Moana Dherlin, performed three songs with the legendary singer-songwriter at the sold-out shows, including his Grammy Award-winning “Copacabana.”
“My entire life I’ve been surrounded by performers in my family,” said Los Alamitos High senior Presley Perez, “and I’m really proud to say I’m the only one who has performed at the Hollywood Bowl.”
Bobby Harbin, also a senior and another of the 62 choir members on the stage, said, “It’s a legendary performance space, and it’s an amazing opportunity that we’ve been invited to perform here.”
SoundFX also appeared with Manilow last Christmas at the Microsoft Theater and in recent years has also performed with such headliners as Kristin Bell, Nick Jonas, John Stamos, Journey, Foreigner, Patti Lupone and Kristin Chenoweth.
All seven award-winning Los Alamitos High choirs will be performing their annual Broadway Show at the LAHS Performing Arts Center September 26-28.
