Using a strong defense that forced five interceptions and a fumble, the No. 5 ranked (OC Register) Los Al Griffins downed host No. 12 Tesoro 35-16 in the final non-league contest of the season for both teams.

Los Alamitos defenders John Newman and Nicholas Valenzuela each returned interceptions for touchdowns of 70 and 30 yards, respectively.

Equally impressive was the progress of junior quarterback Cade McConnell who threw for 238 yards with three touchdowns.  McConnell missed all of last season due to an injury but received high praise from coach Ray Fenton for his progress.  “Varsity games are much faster than freshman games, so for him to come out and get better every week is impressive.”

On Los Alamitos’ second possession of the game, McConnell threw a tunnel screen to Kenui Huey who ran the ball 41 yards for a touchdown to give the Griffins a 7-0 lead.

The Griffins begin Sunset League play next week with a road match against Fountain Valley at Huntington Beach High.
