GRIFFIN SPORTS: 6-run 7th propels Baseball to sweep over FV

The Los Al baseball squad broke up a close game with a six run seventh inning as they defeated Fountain Valley 11-4. Griffins got big RBI hits in the inning from A.J. Jason Cappell, Reid, Reef Danner, and Zach Sutherland, who each had RBIs in the inning.

Los Al now has a 10-6-2 record.

Los Al Freshman

The Griffin freshman squad secured the series sweep with a 7-0 win over the Fountain Valley frosh. Brooks Bergeron, Devin Porch and Sutton DeNinno all had RBI hits to power a 2nd inning rally. Jack Lorenz, Tristan Dalzell and Andrew Hammond combined for the shutout on the mound.

 

 

 

 

 


SOFTBALL:

The Griffins lost a tough 4-3 contest to NorCal powerhouse St. Francis of Mountain View in the quarterfinals of the Michelle Carew Classic,  then rallied to beat South Torrance 9-3.  Los Al, which is now 3-1 in the tournament, will play the 5th place game at 5:30 this evening against the loser of the Villa Park-Las Vegas centennial match.

Coming into the tournament, Villa Park had been ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports St. Francis was No. 2.  Los Al was ranked at No. 12.  On the first day of action, Los Al beat Gahr and El Camino Real, the defending champ of the LA City Section.

After two scoreless innings, Los Al got on the board first after an RBI single by junior third baseman Giselle Alvarez. They extended the lead to two and senior pitcher Ally Robbins was rolling along until the fifth when Washington-bound Sydney Stewart hit a three-run home run to give the Lancers a lead they never relinquished.  Stewart, who was West Coast Prep’s Player of the Year in 2021, had hit a grand slam in Day 1 action.

St. Francis now plays host Canyon in the Gold Bracket semi-final, while Orange Lutheran, which handed Villa Park its first defeat of the year, takes on Norco.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Huntington Beach defeated Los Alamitos, 3-2 in a cross-conference match on Friday.  Los Al’s record dropped to 19-6.  They play another tough cross-conference opponent in Newport Harbor on Tuesday at Los Al, then resume Wave League play at Edison on Thursday, and finish their regular season with matches against Marina and Fountain Valley the following week.  Los Al is currently first in the Wave league with a 3-0 mark.

 

Track and Field

The Los Al Track and Field team had a special presentation on their field this week as Bob Babbit from Challenge Athletes and Kurt Sandoval of ABC7 presented Los Al athlete Carson Fox with a new leg!   Fox who was playing football at Los Al, was diagnosed with a tumpor in his leg and had to have an emergency amputation last year.
