GRIFFIN SPORTS: Baseball surging with fifth win in six games

The Los Al baseball squad enters the halfway mark of their season with a 7-4-1 mark after downing Fountain valley 6-2 Friday afternoon.  The win marked the fifth win in six games for the surging Griffins who will return to action today against Huntington Beach,  the No 5 team in Orange County and No. 7 in CIF Division 1.

The Griffins will be seeking some revenge after being edged last week by the Oilers in a close 4-3 game.

Yesterday, Josh Donegan turned in a strong performance on the mound, getting help from Derek Valdez in relief.  Los Al got offensive support with hits by Justin Stembridge, Wyatt Madison, Reef Danner, Nate Dowdell and Jake Evans in the 9th, Los Al got the W vs league rival Fountain Valley. On to HB tomorrow. Let’s Go Griffins!

The Griffins defeated Laguna Beach 5-3 at home on Wednesday.  Jonathan Lopez pitched the first five innings for the win and got help from Matthew Wurmlinger and Michael Pirrello to close it out. Pirrello recorded the last three outs to earn the save.
A three-run third inning provided enough offense for Los Al but was helped by two more in the fifth for insurance.  Dowdell, Danner, Pirrello, Evans and Gavin Porch each collected one hit in the balanced attack.
Los Al has now won four of its last five.  the only setback coming last Saturday in a close 4-3 loss to Huntington Beach.

Josh Donegan turned in a great pitching performance and Los Al almost pulled it out with a 6th inning rally that included a 2 RBI double by Cody Hearn and a game-tying RBI single by Wyatt Madison,.  Michael Pirello had a two hits for Los Al.


BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Griffins win Sunset opener, improve to 15-5

The Los Al Boys Volleyball team opened their Sunset Conference Season with a 3-0 home win over Laguna Beach on Wednesday, and improved their season record to 15-5.

The Griffins traveled to Corona Del Mar Friday (results were not available at Press time), and then begin their Wave League season next week with a home match against Edison and a road affair at Marina.

The Griffins entered Sunset Conference play with a 14-5 mark, which included the championship at the tough Redondo Union Invitational (photo above).  After emerging unscathed in pool play, the Griffins notched four straight wins in the knockout rounds – shutting out Carlsbad, Redondo Union, and Servite by 2-0 scores and then defeating Sunset rival Huntington Beach 2-1.   Los Al finished second at the Long Beach Classic at Millikan High School.

The volleyball team will have a fundraiser at Crazy Fish Grill on next Thursday, March 24.

 


TRACK:  Bragg sets Frosh 100-meter mark

Los Al freshman Devin Bragg earned a Flying Frosh alert for turning in a wind-legal 10.75 100 meter dash n a dual meet against Corona del Mar this week.  That broke the school freshman record set by the legendary Griffin speedster Justin Woods.

That wasn’t the only notable 100 meter run of the meet.  Griffin sophomore runner Carson Fox, returned to competition by running in the 100-meter race after having a leg amputated in a fight against cancer.  The OC Register has the story.

The Los Al Track team will split forces this weekend with some participating at the California Relays at Long Beach Wilson Stadium, and others heading to South Orange County for the 51st Laguna Beach Trophy Invite.

They return to Sunset League action with a home meet against Edison on Thursday, March 24.


SOFTBALL:  Griffins down Cypress & Sunny Hills

The Los Al Softball squad returned to their winning ways this week, downing Cypress 4-3 on Thursday and then defeating Sunny Hills 9-4 Friday afternoon.  The Griffins, who finished in third place at last week;s prestigious Tournament of Champions, are now 10-3 on the season.
