Los Alamitos 66, Esperanza 47
Los Al wins again at the Tustin Classic beating Esperanza 67-47. The Griffins were led by Christian Bermudez 12 points and Daniel Mellgoza’s 11 points.
Los Al plays San Clemente tomorrow at 7:30 pm in the Tustin Classic Semifinal. San Clemente downed Calvary Chapel 59-55.
Against Esperanza, the Griffins former long-time Sunset League rival until Esperanza moved into the __ League, Los Al jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute. But the Aztecs rallied to take a 9-8 midway through the period. Then, propelled by a trio of three-pointers, the Griffins went on a 21-6 run to end the period with a 28-15 lead. Los Al hit two more threes and showed some tough defense to have the game squarely in hand at halftime, 45-23.
The Griffins, who improved their overall record to 11-4, built their lead to 30 in the third period and coasted to victory the rest of the way.
It was the second straight strong showing by Los Al, which defeated Woodbridge 78-53 on Monday. In San Clemente, they face a team with a 10-4 record, but one of those losses was a 57-42 setback to the Grifffins in mid-November in the Harris Tournament.
Girls Soccer rebounds at Excalibur with 5-2 win over Ayala
After failing to advance at the first two rounds of the Excalibur Tournament, the Los Al Girls soccer team salvaged some pride with a 5-2 win over Ayala High of Chino Hills in the team’s final consolation match.
Los Al had fallen to eventual tourney finalist Capo Valley 2-1 in their opener, and then tied Etiwanda but lost a penalty-kick shootout in Monday’s action.
Senior Mimi Abusham scored four goals to lead the offense against Ayala. Fellow senior Marissa Salazar added the fifth and had an assist. Abusham now has ten goals on the season to lead the Griffins.
Los Al jumps right back into tournament action on Thursday with a match against Troy before taking a break for the New Year’s Holiday weekend. The Griffins start play in the Sunset Confernce Surf Division on Jan. 4 against Newport Harbor.
