The Los Al Boys basketball team fell to Edison 71-65 in overtime Thursday night at Edison, clinching an outright league Championship for the Chargers for the first time in school history.

Edison entered the game with a 5-0 Surf League record and the Griffins were 4-1.  A win could have given Los Al a share of the title.

Regulation play ended in a 61-61 tie.  And it was 65-65 with a minute and a half remaining, in overtime but Edison’s 6-0 run put away the game.

Senior Christian Bermudez, a 6-4 forward, led Los Alamitos with 18 points including three 3s. Daniel Mellgoza added 17 points for the Griffins.

Although Los Al finished with a 4-2 mark, their second-place finish is still good enough for a CIF playoff berth.  Los Al, which has a 21-6 overall mark, is in Division I.  Edison is the 2nd ranked team in Division II.   Both items will learn their playoff berths and schedules this weekend.

Boys Soccer win Surf League with Tuesday win over FV

Los Al Boys Soccer squad fell to Edison 2-1 in their season finale on Wednesday night, but the mood was still copacetic around Griffin-ville.

That’s because thanks to their 3-1 win over Fountain Valley on Monday night, the Griffins had already clinched first place in the Surf League standings  and the Leagues’s top spot in the upcoming CIF playoffs.

The loss dropped the Griffins’ Surf League record to 5-1 Los Al has an overall record of 9-6-4 and now waits for this weekend’s release of the CIF playoff brackets to see who their next opponent will be.

Girls Soccer Secures 4th straight Surf League Title

The Los Al Girls soccer remained at the top of the Sunset soccer hill, winning both games this week to secure their fourth straight Surf League championship.

The Girls clinched a tie for Surf title a week ago with a 3-0 win over Edison on Jan. 27.  After falling to Huntington Beach 2-1 last Monday, the squad rallied to end the season Wednesday with a  4-0 win over Corona Del Mar and secure the title.

In Wednesday’s title-clinching finale, goals were scored by Juniors Kaylee Noble and Sanaa Guyness, and seniors Marissa Salazar and Kai Medby.  It was Salazar’s 16th goal of the year.  Senior Amelia (Mimi) Abusham notched her 9th assist of the year, which along with her 18 goals, gives her a team-leading 45 points.  Fellow senior Maria Salazar

The Griffins now wait to see if the loss to Huntington Beach will cost them one of the Top 4 seeds in the CIF playoff rankings which will be announced this weekend.  The Griffins were No. 4 in the Jan. 31 coaches poll, but it’s possible the loss might allow Villa Park to move ahead of them.   First-round games begin next Friday.

When the Sunset League expanded to eight teams for the 2018-19 school year, it became a conference for football and divided into two four-team leagues – The Surf and the Wave — for most team sports.  The Surf was always composed of the stronger teams from the previous season.

The success of the Girls program over its 40-year history (first season was 1981-82) has been so impressive it is hard to keep it all straight , as witnessed by their Instagram post, incorrectly celebrating their fifth Sunset title.

Los Al has actually won nine Sunset League titles (1996, ’97, 2004, ’05, ’07, ’08, 09 , ’13, ’18), four Sunset/Surf League titles and five Empire League titles prior to that. Now add their four straight Sunset Surf titles to the mix, and that is 18 league titles in 40 seasons.
