The Los Al Girls Golf squad placed five golfers and a coach on the Long Beach area Dream team which was announced Thursday by the Press-Telegram.
Juniors Kiera Cheng and Kate Younger were named to the first while seniors Andrea Camacho and Kylee Gregory and sophomore Abby Sickles graced the second team. Coach John Haygood was named the area’s coach of the year, for both the Covid-delayed and shortened 2020-21 Spring season and the normal Fall 2021 season.

Haygood, was honored after his girls squad won the CIF Southern Section Division 2 championship in the pandemic-delayed spring season, then finished fourth in the fall after making the jump to Division 1, finishing just two strokes out of third place in the Division 1 championships. The Lady Griffins placed ninth at the Southern California regional tournament.
Haygood, who has been teaching math at Los Al for 22 years and also coached football and baseball, had previously led the Boys team to a CIF title in 2014.
Boys Basketball
The Los Al Boys Basketball team got back on the winnigtrack, downing La Mirada 58-41 on Thursdaynight. The Griffins were led by Tyler Matthew’s 16 points, Maddox Monson’s 14 points, and Jake Petroff’s 10 points.
The win improved Los Al’s record to 9-4. On Tuesday, the Griffins fell to Cypress on the Centurion’s home court. The score was close 47-43 at the end of the third quarter, but the Centurions outscored Los Al 11-2 to start the final period and won 65-49.
Boys Soccer
The Los Al Boys soccer team returns to the pitch today, hosting Mira Costa. Not only will the Griffins hoping to notch their first win of the season, they will also be looking for a little revenge. The teams met in the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs last season with the Mustangs winning 1-0.
The Griffins will bring an 0-2-1 mark into the fray. They opened the season on Dec. 3 with a 3-1 loss to Santa Ana, then tied St. John Bosco 2-2 this past Monday. Last night they fell to Warren of Downey, 2-0.
The schedules for next week’s South Torrance Holiday Classic have been released and the Griffin Boys will open against Lakewood on Tuesday, Dec. 21
Girls Soccer resumes Best in the West play
The Los Al Girls soccer team will face No. 3 San Juan Hills in the semifinal round of the Best in the West tournament Saturday morning at University HIgh.
The Girls advanced out of last Saturday’s pool play with a win over No. 7 Mater Dei and a tie with No.2 Santiago. San Juan Hills tied but finished ahead of top-ranked Harvard-Westlake in their pool.
If the Griffins win, they would advance to the championship game and face the winner of the Newport Harbor-Temecula Valley match. Temecula Valley is tied for the No. 10 CIF spot.
The Los Al ladies’ record is now 1-1-2.

Recruiting – 3 footballers sign Letters of Intent
Three Los Al football players signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday, Dec. 15. It was the first day that football players who are seniors (Class of 2022) could officially sign a letter of intent.
