The Los Alamitos girls volleyball team started the season with an impressive showing at the prestigious Ann Kang tournament, held last weekend in Hawaii. The tournament featured five teams ranked in the National Top 50 by vballrecruiter.com.
The Griffins went 6-2 in the three day tournament, and reached the semifinals. In addition, junior Outside Hitter Ashley Repetti was named to the all-tournament squad.
Los Al, which entered the tournament seeded No 6 in Pool A, opened play with a 2-1 record on Thursday, recording wins over two Texas teams, Glen Rose and Lovejoy. The latter is ranked No. 25 by Volleyball Recruiter.com. The Griffins then fell to eventual tourney champ Mira Costa, who are ranked No. 4 nationally. They followed that up with a 3-0 effort on Friday, posting wins over three Hawaii teams, Moanalua and Punahou, and Baldwin.
They finished pool play with a 2-1 win over Oaks Christian Saturday morning. That gave them a 6-1 record, tying them for first place with Mira Costa, who got the higher seed thanks to their head-to-head win and the higher set win-loss percentage. Only the top two teams in both pools advanced to the championship round.
Los Al advanced to play Pool B leader Cornerstone Christian of San Antonio, Texas in the semi-finals. The Texas team was ranked No. 8 in thje national pre-season polls, but the Griffins played them tough before falling 25-23 and 25-21.
The loss ended the tournament for Los Al except for the post-tournament awards which recognized Repetti’s strong showing. The junior had a .390 hitting % in the eight matches.
