BOYS BASKETBALL

Good news and bad news.  The bad news is the Corona del Mar boys basketball team had to postpone Wednesday night’s game against Los Al due to COVID-protocol within the CdM program. No make-up dates have been announced.

The good news is that Griffin Tyler Matthews was named to Steve Fryer’s Fab 5 athlete of the week list in the OC Reg.  Mathews, a 6-3 senior guard, won MVP honors at the Tustin Holiday Classic after scoring 15 points with six rebounds in the Griffins’ 41-36 win over Chaparral in the championship game.

CIF to allow Sunday Games for schedules “affected by Covid”

The California State CIF will allow high school games to be played on Sundays this winter to combat the impact of surging COVID-19 cases.  The rules, which go into effect this week, according to the OC Register, will, starting this week, permit teams and leagues to hold competitions on Sundays if their schedules were affected by the coronavirus.

Locally, the CIF-Southern Section postponed its traditional competitive cheer championships, scheduled for Saturday, to Feb. 5.   A new date has not been set, although the section noted “we want to try and provide every possible opportunity we can to allow for this competition to take place this year.”
