Adrian Alcazar put away a rebound of a blocked shot with ten minutes remaining as the Los Alamitos High School Boys Soccer team edged Newport Harbor 1-0 in their Surf League opener.
It was the fourth win in a row for the Griffins who are finally getting close to healthy after many players were forced to miss games in early December and over the holiday break. It led to five losses and two ties over a nine games stretch. Since the New Years, Los Al has now win four straight matches and has an overall record of 117-3.
One of those who missed a number of games during their loss streak was wing Alex Van Steenburgen who had been the team’s leading scorer up to getting hs ankle stepped on hard in the Downey tournament and then pulling a hamstring before the Holiday break. But he returned in good style. With ten minutes remaining, Van Steenburgen pushed the ball up the left side and got around the Newport defender by the goal line, forcing the center back to come over. Van Steenbergen slipped a pass to Michael Simpson who one-touched a hard short shot towards the goal. The keeper blocked it but Alcazar controlled the hard rebound and quickly slid it past the keeper for the game winner. It was Alcazar’s fourth goal of the season.
The JVs also notched a win, downing the Sailors 3-0. Goals were scored by Tyler Miller (Mike Wasson assist), Brandon Nguyen and Jake Wolovich (another assist for Wasson).
The Frosh-Soph tied 1-0.
