GRIFFIN SPORTS: Los Al Girls win Excalibur Cup, improve to 15-0-3

The Los Alamitos Girls Soccer team downed Edison 2-0 to win the prestigious and tough Excalibur Cup tournament Saturday morning.

The win completes an undefeated non-league portion of their season for the No. 2 ranked Griffins Los Al and improves their overall record to 15-0-3. They had previously won the Aliso Cup Tournament in early December.

Los Alam, itos was once again led by sophomore Tabbi LaParl who got the Griffins on the board barely in the second minute (67 seconds), scoring her 19th goal of the season (in just 18 games) on a hard shot from 30 yards out.

Khalia Gathright then scored off a set piece short corner kick in the 13th min when Colby Barnett slotted a pass to the far post which Gathright put away to give Los Al a 2-0 lead which held up the rest of the way. It was Barnett’s eight assist of the season.

LaParl’s 19 goals on the season is just four goals off the school-record 23 she scored last year, when she was the Sunset League Offensive MVP, all Orange County, and the only freshman on the All-CIF Division 1 team. She also now has 42 in her career, third place on the Griffins career list. She trails only Liz Willemse (Class of 1991, 52 goals) and Sophia (Bo) Medina (’06, 51 goals).
