The Los Al Softball team reached the semi-finals of the prestigious 26th Annual Dave Kops Tournament of Champions for the 7th time in 8 seasons, but had a shortened Saturday.
Unfortunately, they got pounded by Murietta Mesa 9-1 in the afternoon affair, sending the Griffins to the third-place game against Whittier Christian. The latter opted to forfeit the game, so officially the Griffins were 7-0 winners, and owners of the tourney’s third place trophy.
Los Al finished 4-1 in the tourney – so all in all, not a bad weekend.
Villa Park beat Murrieta Mesa 3-1 in Saturday night’s championship game which concluded three days and over 140 games of tournament play. Los Al had fallen to Villa Park in the finals of the Cypress tournament on Feb. 19.
The Griffins opened the tournament on Thursday evening with a 7-3 win over Canyon View, then advanced to Saturday’s semifinals by downing the Gallup New Mexico Bengals, 11-2 in the morning match and following that up with a 9-6 win over Torrance 9-6 in the quarterfinals. Julie Holcomb led the Los Al attack with two doubles.
Los Al returns to action with games on Thursday and Friday against Cypress and Sunny Hills. The Griffins defeated Cypress 6-3 in the Cypress Tournament semi-finals.
