GRIFFIN SPORTS: Water Polo romps, Haygood is OC Girls Golf Coach of the Year; Karich is SoCal All-Varsity VB

The Los Alamitos Griffins Girls Water Polo recorded an impressive 8-3 win at Coronado Saturday afternoon.
Brown-bound senior Katie Dvonch and junior Sofia Munatones each scored two goals. Goalie Tara DeBrabander, an LMU commit, had 13 saves.
The Breakers were winners of two of the last four CIF Southern Section Open Division titles in the San Diego section but are 1-5 this season after yesterday’s result.

The Griffins, who improved their record to 6-3, return to action next Wednesday with a 5pm match at No. 5 ranked Mater Dei. Los Alamitos is ranked No. 7.

GIRLS SOCCER: Varsity ties Bishop Amat 0-0; lower levels win

The Los Alamitos Girls soccer team recorded its 11th shutout of the season, but the offense was also blanked in a 0-0 tie with Bishop Amat on Saturday evening at Los Al. Los Al is now 11-0-2 on the seaqson.

The Lady Griffins now take time off for Christmas then return to action next Thursday with the always tough Excalibur Tournament of Champions, hosted by Foothill High School. Instead of elimination play, that event also now begins with two games of pool play. On Thursday morning, Los Al takes on Steele Canyon HS (southern San Diego area) and finishes pool play against Cypress that evening. This year’s event will be played at the Silverlakes complex in Norco.

The Los Al Girls JVs, who have had trouble finishing opportunities in the early stages of the year, seem to have solved that issue with a 7-1 win over Bishop Amat on Saturday afternoon. Peyton Nelson scored four goals for the Griffins.

The Frosh Soph won 2-0 behind goals by Sofia Ferguson and Jennifer Biernbaum.

GIRLS GOLF: Los Al coach John Haygood is named OC Register’s OC Coach of the Year

Los Alamitos Girls Golf Coach John Haygood was named the OC Register’s 2018 Coach of the Year on Saturday. Haygood, who has been the Griffins golf coach for 17 years, led the Griffins to a 6-0 record in the Sunset Conference’s Surf League, with a team that had no all-county players but collectively broke the team scoring record five times during the regular season.  

GIRLS VB: Karich named to SoCal All-Varsity squad

Abby Karich added more volleyball honors to her 2018 resume. The junior outside hitter, who led Los Al to the CIF Division II title, was named to the SoCal Newspaper Group’s All varsity team,.
Karich had previously earned the CIF Division II Player of the Year award and was named the All-Orange County squad.

The Southern California Newspaper Groups owns the Long Beach Press-Telegram, the Orange County Register, the South Bay Daily Breeze, the Daily News in the San Fernando Valley, as well as papers in Pasadena, Riverside and elsewhere.

ALUMNI: Hartong becomes first American to win snow volleyball gold

Emily Hartong, who led Los Alamitos to multiple CIF volleyball titles a decade ago, earned All-America honors at Hawaii, and won a South Korean Pro Volleyball title, and has recently been a touring beach volleyball professional, became part of the first American team to win a gold medal in a snow volleyball competition, capturing a gold in -7 degree temperatures in Moscow yesterday.
