Los Al High honors famous alumni for the first time
LOS ALAMITOS-The stars aligned for Los Alamitos High School on Wednesday as more than 40 of its most famous alumni and 13 faculty members became the first members of the school’s Hall of Fame.
More than 250 people gathered at the Grand Hotel in Long Beach to celebrate the inaugural honorees that included sports stars, authors, actors and teachers, among others.
The event, organized by school booster clubs, looked to raised money for some needed campus improvements while paying homage to some of its most influential students.
Baseball stars and alumni J.T. Snow of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Robb Nen of the San Francisco Giants first offered sarcasm to describe the event while chatting over Bud Lights before the event.
“It feels great anytime you get to be honored with an idol like Robb Nen,” Snow said.
“I was always hoping to get in for academics,” Nen chimed in.
But on a more serious note, both players were excited to be recognized by the school that gave them their start in their successful baseball careers.
“No, it’s really an honor,” Nen said. “It’s something I never thought would actually happen. But I’m glad it finally did.”
Broadway diva Susan Egan was also one of the inductees. Egan, a multiple Tony Award nominated actress, is most well known for her role as the original Belle in the stage adaptation of Beauty and the Beast.
“We were such dorks in high school so it feels great to get back at those people,” she joked. “It took us 20 years but we are here making our statement, ‘We’re cool, darn it!’”
She added she was inspired that the school community came together to organize the event that will fund upgrades for her alma mater.
“This just shows how amazing this school was and still is,” she said. “It’s exciting. I hope they invite us back to see all the improvements.”
