The City of Los Alamitos will be hosting a virtual workshop to provide education and a clear roadmap on the forthcoming waste regulations (SB 1383) for cities statewide, including Los Alamitos. The workshop is intended to help inform residents, property owners and businesses of the expectations and plan of action and will be held virtually on Tuesday, February 15, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.
SB 1383, initially adopted in 2016, set an ambitious benchmark to help reduce methane emissions of short-lived climate pollutants and offset organic waste disposal. Every municipality statewide has been mandated to implement policies toward ensuring that the plan is in full effect beginning this year. By 2024, cities will be mandated to have strict enforcement through the state and be self-governed. In adjusting to this reformed practice, the City will assist to reduce 75% of organic waste by 2024 and properly receive 20% of currently disposed surplus food by 2025.
In partnership with its new waste hauling service provider, Universal Waste Systems Inc. (UWS), the City of Los Alamitos is ahead of the curve by establishing a system in which rationally collects and disposes organic waste, green waste, recyclables, and general waste. Furthermore, the City will be prepared to meet the mandates by establishing edible food recovery programs through partnerships in the community, and continue to extend its education and outreach for residents, property owners and businesses in town.
