The Our Los Al TV crew covers the first local participation in the International Walk & Bike to School Day with reporting from Los Alamitos Elementary and Rossmoor schools.
The day is a project of the National Center for Safe Routes to School which is committed to empowering communities to make walking and bicycling to school a safe, appealing, preferred choice for families. More than 5,200 events around the country are celebrating the benefits and fun of walking to school during October, Walk to School Month.
The first walk was organized in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America, as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. In 2000, the event became international when the UK and Canada (both of which had already been promoting walking to school) and the USA joined together for the first International Walk to School Day. Growing interest in participation all over the world led the International Walk to School Committee to shifts its promotion to International Walk to School Month for the entire month of October.
