After a career that ranks him as one of the top defensive linemen to ever play football for Los Alamitos, Jim earned a scholarship to UCLA where, as an offensive lineman, he helped lead the Bruins to three bowl games.
At Los Al, he made a reputation as firece defensive lineman. As a junior in Fall 1973, Jim earned All-Irvine League first team defensive player honors and first team all-county honors. In 1974 he was the CIF 4-A Lineman of the Year, after earning All-CIF and All-Orange County first team defensive honors. In 1988 the LA Times selected him to their All-time Orange County team.
At UCLA, playing for Dick Vermeil and then Terry Donahue, he was an offensive lineman on teams that earned visits to the Rose Bowl (1975 season), the Liberty Bowl (1976 season) and the Liberty Bowl (1978 season) — this in an era with many fewer bowl games. In 1977 he was honored as the outstanding lineman of the USC-UCLA game.
Jim has had a long career with with Bristol-Myers Squibb and after some time at the company headquarters in New Jersey, he relocated back to Los Alamitos. He married his college sweetheart Carol, and their three children, Michelle, Alex and Andrew both graduated from Los Alamitos HS. Michelle (’02) played on the Girls Basketball team, while Alex (’05) was an All-Sunset League lineman on the Griffin’s CIF finalist in 2004. Their youngest son, Andrew graduated in 2011, and was also an all-league football player.
