Seal Beach Lions host 72nd annual ‘Honor the Teacher’ event

Kennedy, our 35th President, said, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength for our nation.” Those words ring true for the Los Alamitos Unified School District (LAUSD). The Seal Beach Lions Club has been producing the “Honor the Teacher” event for 72 years now. It is an opportunity to have each school at every level, elementary, middle and high school through peer evaluation, select an extraordinary teacher each year. In a packed Marina Center, with the LEOs serving and clearing the tables, many teachers were with family and mentors who had changed the lives of so many children.
Scandrick to host passing tourney in Los Al
Former Los Alamitos High School defensive back Orlando Scandrick, now an NFL cornerback, will host his fourth annual Elite High School Passing League on May 18, at Los Alamitos High School (3591 W Cerritos Ave, Los Alamitos, CA 90720) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Scandrick said in an interview, “I think football is a team sport and this is a great opportunity for kids from the inner city and from all over to play against each other.” “It’s a chance for them (teams) to learn how to work with others and to play against others at “a very high level,” he added. “It puts them all on the same stage.”
12th annual Be More Healthy Expo set for Saturday, May 18 at Seal Beach Pier
What could be better than spending a day at the beach? This is what could be better: spending a day at the beach AND checking out the status of your health. On Saturday, May 18, the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce will present the Be More Healthy Expo at the Seal Beach Pier. The free event is open to the public. The 12th annual Expo will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The theme of this year’s event is Diabetes and Thyroid Awareness. The Chamber is excited to continue to provide important health information to the greater Seal Beach area through the event.

Teditorial: Local Young Marine travels to Iwo Jima for memorial
By Ted Apodaca – Earlier this year, the Young Marines sent representatives to Guam and Iwo Jima, as escorts for WWII veterans attending the annual “Reunion of Honor,” in March. Among the Young Marines, was YM/SgtMaj Megan Lynch, 16, who is the District 6 Young Marine of the Year. District 6 includes six states. She is part of the Southeast County Young Marines, which includes and meets in Seal Beach. This is the 74th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima and the 75th for Guam. Seal Beach, Huntington Harbour residents get new bridge
By Chris MacDonald – A new Edinger Bridge connecting Seal Beach and Huntington Harbour residents was recently opened in a ceremony before 65 locals and officials, including Orange County Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Michelle Steel. The bridge on Edinger Avenue, near Countess Street, unites Huntington Harbour with Seal Beach’s Sunset Aquatic Marina across Anaheim Bay, adjacent to the National Wildlife Refuge. “This project was much-needed because local residents have been without a bridge for 2 years, ever since the old structure deteriorated,” Steel said. “This is a stronger, safer passageway that was built five feet higher to meet floodplain standards.”
