Seal Beach officials cut ribbon for beach access mats

For Annalyn’s 8th birthday, Friday, Sept. 17, she got to take her wheelchair onto the beach.  A gathering of city and county officials and guests sang “Happy Birthday” to her.  She also got a gift bag from the District Two County Supervisor Katrina Foley. A birthday cake was served on the sand, presented by District One Councilman/Mayor Joe Kalmick and the supervisor.

 

Seal Beach looks at draft of Housing Element of General Plan

The Seal Beach City Council this week directed staff to submit a draft of the city’s Housing Element of the General Plan to the state government.  To address the state mandate to plan for a lot of new homes in town, city staff recommended Seal Beach consider making potential zoning changes throughout the city. The changes would be considered over a three-year period. For now, a planning document is off to the state for official review.  Old Town Councilman and Mayor Joe Kalmick called the submission of the plan an exercise.

OC issues 2020 Hate Crime report

Hate incidents motivated by anti-Asian bigotry increased 1,800%, according to 2020 Hate Crime Report, which was released on Friday, Sept. 17, by the Orange County Human Relations Commission.  The county report did not provide a city-by-city breakdown of hate crimes or hate incidents.

LAUSD adopts goals, values for current school year

At its Sept. 14 meeting, the Los Alamitos Unified School District Board of Education adopted a one-page document outlining its Goals & Core Values for the 2021-22 year.  It was developed from discussions at an annual summertime workshop attended by board members. The district’s nine campuses across Rossmoor, Los Alamitos and Seal Beach have been open for full-time in-person instruction for weeks.

Three local schools named to U.S. Dept. of Ed “Blue Ribbon Schools” list

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona today recognized 325 schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2021.   The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Secretary Cardona will make the announcement during his Return to School Road Trip, where he will visit an awardee school, Walter R. Sundling Jr. High School, in Palatine, Illinois.
