ALUMNI: Ex-Griffin Megill “stripped” of glory in Major league pitching debut; Wong-Orantes is named top libero at Olympic tune-up tourney

Tylor Megill made an impressive Major League debut for the New York Mets on Thursday night. The former Griffin (LAHS ’15) pitched a solid 4 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on three hits, and was met with a standing ovation as he walked off the mound during his MLB debut. But as the 25-year-old right-hander approached the Mets dugout, the umpires stopped him. Then, they demanded a dreaded foreign substance check.  The New York papers castigated the umpiring crew, saying they spoiled Megill’s special moment. But Megill seemed to take it all in stride in the post-game interview.

Megill’s brother Trevor also made his major league debut this season, getting a chance with the Chicago Cubs on April 26 when he tossed a scoreless inning.  Although not the first, they are one of a very small number of brothers who have made their major league debuts in the same season.
