The Los Alamitos Griffins put on yet another impressive offensive and defensive display in a 47-0 win over the host Huntington Beach Oilers on Friday night.
The Griffins forced five turnovers, including three in the first quarter, led by Dallas Burke who returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns, while Keanu Norman ran for 192 yards on 21 carries and Demario King caught six passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
The defending league champion Griffins (7-1-1 overall) share first place in the Sunset League with Corona del Mar at 3-0-1. The tie for both teams was last week’s showdown when lightning forced the game to be called near the end of the first quarter with the score tied at 7-7.
The Griffins reportedly wanted to continue the game the next day at Los Al High School, but Corona Del Mar declined, reportedly citing that the Los Al venue did not meet CIF minimum qualifications. Cynics that we are. we suspect that with the two teams in different CIF divisions (which are set by enrollment) neither coach was upset with a tie that theoretically would allow them both to earn a No. 1 seed in their respective divisions.
Los Alamitos, ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 poll, closes out the regular season this Friday night (Oct. 26) against third-place Edison (5-4, 3-1 in league) at Cerritos College. Corona del Mar takes on Huntington Beach.
