GIRLS SOCCER: Griffins open Sunset League with a 3-0 win over Marina

The Los Al Girls soccer team, ranked No. 2 in CIF and Orange County, opened Sunset Conference play with a 3-0 victory over Marina. The win improved the Griffins overall record to 10-0-1.

The Griffins controlled possession of the ball from the outset and got some good looks at the goal early. A few minutes after having a corner kick set piece goal disallowed by an offsides call, Tabbi LaParl got the Griffins on the board in the 13th minute by collecting a deflected pass and quickly sending a line drive into the upper right corner beyond the keeper’s reach.

Jayden Newkirk added two goals in the second half in the 50th and 59th minute.

In lower level action, the Griffin JV’s tied Marina 0-0, and the frosh-Soph won 3-2.

The Griffins continue crossover play against Fountain Valley on Thursday. Under the new format the Sunset “Conference” is divided into two four-team leagues, the Wave League and the Surf League. The Griffins are in the Wave League, and will play the four Surf League teams once at the top of league schedule and then play home and home matches against their intra-league opponents, Edison, Huntington Beach and Corona Del Mar.

GIRLS BB: Los Al 55, Marina 20

Los Alamitos, ranked No. 8 in Orange County, defeated Marina 55-20 in their Sunset Conference opener. Junior guard Sydney Gandy led the Griffin attack with 22 points, seven assists and two steals. Lataviah Miller added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Griffins hit the road Thursday for their first away game vs. Fountain Valley.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Abby Karich named to OC Register All County team

Los Alamitos Junior volleyball standout Abby Karich was named to the Orange County Register’s All Orange County first team squad which was announced Tuesday. Karich, who led the Griffins to the CIF-SS Division 2 championship, had previously been named that divisions’s player of the year. She is committed to play college volleyball at Utah.

Sophomore Star Williams was named to the second team.

MONDAY: Boys BB falls to Marina

Los Al opened its 2018-19 Sunset league season with a 75-57 loss to Marina. Sophomore Kevin Kent led in scoring for the Griffins with 24 points and freshman Tyler Matthews added 19 points. The game was scheduled for Wednesday but because this is finals week under Los Alamitos’ new school calendar, the game was moved up to Monday.

Also, the Griffins ended their run at the St. John Bosco-Gahr Classsic with
58-46 win over LA Wilson on Saturday.

The Griffins are now 4-7 on the season. They return to action Friday night against Fountain Valley.

WATER POLO: DeBrabander notches 600th career save.

Los Alamitos senior goalkeeper Tara DeBrabander, who has committed to play at Loyola Marymount next year, notched her 600th career save last Friday in the Griffins 7-6 win over Long Beach Wilson.
