Girls Basketball improves to 7-1 with dramatic comeback win over Orangewood

The Los Alamitos High  Girls basketball came back from an 18 point deficit to defeat Orangewood Academy 47-44 and capture the champinship of the Hawk Holiday Classic.  

Los Al trailed 27-9 at halftime, but outscored Orangewood 22-5 in the fourth quarter.  

Junior point guard Sydney Gandy who scored 21 points in the championship game, was Tournament MVP.  Sophomore teammates Latavia Miller and Molly Clarke joined her on the all-tourney team. 

With the win, the Lady Griffins improve their record to 7-1.  They return to action on Monday with a pool play game against Esperanza in the Villa Park Lady Spartans’ Winter Shootout.  The next night is a tough re-match against Orangewood.

Girls Soccer:  Los Al Varsty advances to Aliso Cup final

The Los Al girls soccer team won a pair of games on Saturday to advance to the Monday night finals of the Aliso Cup against the host team.

The Griffins downed Hart 3-0 in Saturday morning’s quarter-final action, then ntched a secon shutout with a 2-0 win over perennial powerhouse Upland on Saturday eveming.

Los Al got on the board early against Upland as Colby Barnett struck in the third minute to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.  Four minutes later Khalia Cathright scored to give Los Al a 2-0 lead which held up for the win.  

The Los Al JVs also played in the tournament and turned in a respectable performance against Varsity competition.  The JVs fell to the Cypress Varsity 2-0 in bracket play of the President’s Cup Division, and then lost to Temecual valley 1-0 in their final match.  

Frosh-Soph: Charger Cup

The Los Al Frosh-Soph defeated Foothill 2-0 in first round action for the Charger Cup at Edison.  The Frosh-soph went up in the 15th minute when Mya DeYager made a run from the backfield and put it away to make it 1-0.   They got insurance later in the half Riley Kennedy took a pass from Erin Hegstrom and scored.   

Boys Basketball

Los Alamitos  61, Roosevelt (Eastvale) 54
Los Alamitos 71, Segerstrom (Santa Ana) 43

The Los Alamitos Boys basketball Team ended its play in Corona Del Mar’s Beach Bash tournament with a pair of wins — a 71-43 win over Segerstrom High on Thursday and 61-54 win Roosevelt High of Eastvale on Saturday.   In the latter Los Al was led by juniors Kevin Kent and David Olcomendy, both with 18 points, and sophomore center Everett May’s 9 points. Kent 
was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 18.5 points over four games.

The young team which features two juniors and a sophomore finished the Beach Bash with a 3-1 record and evened its season record at 3-3. 

The Boys open the Bosco/Gahr tournament on Tuesday with a match against Covina. 

GIRLS WATER POLO

The Los Al Girls Water Polo team went undefeated in pool play to reach the semi-finals at the condensed Villa Park Classic (Black Division) but then dropped a pair of games to two tough Santa Barbara area teams.

On Friday at the Huntington Beach High pool, Los Al opened the tournament with an 11-5 win over Mira Costa and then notched a 13-7 quarterfinal win over Santa Barbara. 

In Saturday’s top bracket at Beckman, Los Al fell to San Marcos 8-4, then dropped their final match 9-5 to Dos Pueblos.  

Orange Lutheran defeated San Marcos  12-8 in the championship game. 

The tournament had to be condensed to just two days after the severe rains of Thursday forced cancellation for all action that day.
