The Los Al Girls Water Polo Team down Martin Luther King of Riverside 17-6 on Friday afternoon to advance to the semi-final rounds of the Villa Park Classic Tournament.
Los Al had won its pool with a 3-0 mark, downing Troy 22-1 and Dos Pueblos 17- on Thursday. MLK had defeated Mira Costa and El Toro.
The win over MLK advanced the Griffins to Saturday’s championship round semi-finals, to be played at Los Al High Aquatics Center. Los Al plays The Bishop’s of La Jolla at 10am. Bishops was down 7-5 to Santa Barbara with two minutes to go in the third quarter, but outscored them 5-0 in the fourth to gain a 13-5 win. .
The other semi-final pits Long Beach Wilson against San Marcos at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Los Alamitos High School. The losers of the two semis play for third place at 2pm, with the Championship game immediately after at 3pm.
OTHER WATER POLO NEWS: The Griffins were tied for third place — along with Mater Dei, San Marcos, and Santa Margarita, in the CIF rankings which were released this week.
BOYS WATER POLO
Los Al senior Caleb Francisco was named second team All-Orange County Water Polo team by the OC Register. Francisco, an attacker, led the Griffins to 17-12 overall record and an undefeated season for the second year in a row in the Sunset Conference’s Wave League.
BOYS BASKETBALL
The Los Al Griffins Boys basketball team downed Redondo Union 63-57 in a third-round match at the Corona del Mar Beach Bash Basketball Tournament.
Los Al’s leading scorer was Tyler Matthews with 22 points and Jake Petroff chipped in 12 points.
The Griffins, who improved their season record to 7-3, will play Pacifica Christian on Saturday in the tourney’s fifth final round. Pacifica Christian fell to Edison 59-44 on Friday.
GIRLS SOCCER
The Los Al Lady Griffins and the Cypress Centurions played to a 1-1 tie Friday evening on the Los Al field. Los Al is now 0-1-1, while Cypress is 1-2-1.
Los Al, which is ranked No. 8 in the CIF polls released on Dec. 6, begins play in the Best in the West tournament this morning with an 8am Pool C match against Mater Dei at University High in Irvine, followed by an 11am match against Santiago of Corona. The latter ended Los Al’s season in the CIF playoffs last year so the Lady Griffins will be looking for revenge. The elimination bracket rounds will be played the following weekend. Other top teams in the tourney include JSerra and Harvard-Westlake. The schedule is here.
