GRIFFIN SPORTS: Golden Goal gives Los Al soccer victory, Boys BB wins, and Cheer squad readies for first CIF competition

Michael Simpson’s golden goal in overtime gave the Los Alamitos Boys Soccer squad its first lead of the night and a 3-2 victory over Huntington Beach , it gave them a victory over Huntington Beach in Sunset Conference soccer action Wednesday night.

Simpson’s goal came about six minutes into an overtime which only happened because Los Al senior Alex Ridgers put away a rebound with less than two minutes remaining to tie the match at 2-2.

The Oilers scored late in the first half to lead 1-0 at the break. Senior Derek Goodman tied the contest up with a nice chip over a sliding Huntington goalie about ten minutes into the second half. After Huntington regained the lead it took Ridgers heroics to send the match into OT.

Hhe win gives Los Alamitos a 10-7-3 overall record, before it begins Wave Conference play, which involves the four toughest teams in the Sunset Conference – Corona Del Mar, Newport Harbor, and Edison. Los Al will need to win at least 2 of those six matches to reach a .500 record, the minimum required for a CIF playoff wild card spot.

The Griffins host Newport Harbor Friday night at the Los Alamitos turf field.

In JV action, Los Alamitos downed Huntington Beach 3-1.

BOYS BB: Griffins finish crossover play with 84-51 win over HB; Host 20-1 Newport next

The Los Alamitos Boys basketball team finished the crossover part of their Sunset Conference schedule with a 84-51 win over Huntington Beach on Wedneaday night in the Griffin gym. The team was led by sophomore Kevn Kent’s 21 points.

Senior Micguire Monson added 14, while juniors Logan Gillespie’ and David Olcomendy scored 12 and 10, respectively.

Los Alamitos improved its Conference record to 3-1 (6-10 overall) and returns to the court Friday night against a hot Newport Harbor squad which brings a 20-1 record into the fray. It will be the first game of Wave League play. Under the format adapted this year for all sports except football, the Sunset League is now a Conference with two leagues. The Wave league is composed of the four best teams from the previous year. Each team will play three home and home matches against League opponents. Each team will also play the four teams in Surf League (the bottom four from the previous year) one time. The top two teams from each league automatically qualify for the CIF playoffs, but the two other Surf League teams should earn a wild card spot based on their record. It will be a tough road for Los Al unless they can take second in the six game Surf schedule.

CHEERLEADING: CIF to hold first sanctioned Cheeleading competition this Saturday .

The CIF-Southern Section will hold its first sanctioned Cheerleading competition this Saturday at Colony High in Ontario. and Los Alamitos teams will be among the favorites.

National competitions have been held for years, but the event at Colony will be the first Southern Section-sanctioned championship competition. The CIF-SS championships will have 11 divisions, four of which are coed divisions. Teams with two or more males are in one of the four coed divisions; teams with one or no males are in one of the other seven divisions. The event begins at 9 a.m. with the final routines scheduled for 4 p.m.

Teams are placed in divisions by skill level. The more difficult the skills a team does or even attempts, the higher the division for that team. Rules, based on American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators safety guidelines, are in place for CIF-SS competition.

Two Orange County teams are in the top division, Division 1AA – Mater Dei and Newport Harbor. Edison, Los Alamitos and Villa Park are in Division 1A.

GIRLS WP: #2 Corona Del Mar 6, No. 10 Los Alamitos 2

LOS ALAMITOS, CA — The lady Griffins of Los Alamitos High School varsity women’s water polo fell to the No. 2 ranked Corona Del Mar in opening round action for the Surf League.

No. 10 Los Alamitos turned in a strong defensive effort but falls to #2 Corona with goalie Tara DeBrabander turning in a solid effort for Los Al, but the Corona defense was even tougher, with keeper Maya Avital turning away 11 Griffin shots. The Los Al offense was supplied by freshman Lindsey Harris with two goals and senior Katie Dvonch added one.
