The Los Al Griffins Boys basketball team fell to undefeated Tesoro 63-49 in a second-round match at the Corona Del Mar Beach bash Tournament on Wednesday night at Newport Harbor gym.

Tesoro improved to 10-0 while Los Alamitos fell to 6-3.  Los Al, which still has a chance of finishing in fifth place in the 16-team tourney, gets a day off before playing Edison on Friday afternoon at 4:30 on the Corona del Mar court.

The Chargers fell to Mater Dei 66-54 yesterday, but at one point led 43-40 in the third quarter before Mater Dei outscored the 26-11 to put the game away.

Friday’s championship round semi-finals have the county’s No. 1 team, Mater Dei (4-1), playing against No. 14 Tesoro (10-0) at 6 p.m. at Corona del Mar, and JSerra (4-1) takes on Etiwanda (8-0) at 7:30 p.m.  JSerra advances because their scheduled opponent, Crean Lutheran, had to withdraw from the tournament because of some Covid test results. The tourney director got a quick substitute — undefeated Foothill — and the Knights defeated JSerra 69-64.  But because of other schedule commitments, Foothill could not move on.

ICE HOCKEY

The Los Al Varsity Ice Hockey team will play Damien High on Friday at 5pm at the Great Park Ice Arena in Irvine.  The Griffin Varsity current sports a 6-4 record, fifth best in the 12-team conference. The JVs sport a 6-1 mark, second best in the Lincoln Conference.  Peter Fabian and Omar Mohammed lead the team in scoring with 6 points.

High School Ice Hockey is a club sport sponsored by the Anaheim Ducks.  Los Al fields a Varsity team in Division 3, and a JV team,  Both are composed primarily of Los Al students along with a few students from nearby schools that don’t offer hockey programs.

GIRLS WATER POLO

The Los Al Girls Water Polo Varsity downed Foothill 9-7 on Tuesday  to even their season mark at 1-1.   The Griffins, who opened the season on November 30 with a tough 9-8 loss to Orange Lutheran, next play against Los Altos in the Wolfpack Holiday Tournament.

The Griffins feature some seniors who have committed to pay in College Division I.  Center Lindsey Harris has signed to play at Cal (UC Berkeley) next year and sisters Sofia and Sydney Munatones have signed to play at UC San Diego, which this year joins the Big West Conference and will move up to Division I.   Sofia Munatones and Harris have both been two-time All County selections.

Harris, a 6-1 center from Rossmoor, Calif., is a two-time member of the U.S Development National Team, and upon her signing day, Cal Coach Coralie Simmons said, “Lindsey is a quintessential center with tremendous upside,” Simmons said. “Her strength and explosiveness will blend well with our returning squad. We look forward to her growth and presence in and out of the water. She’s a natural leader, who leads by working hard and creating strong relationships.”
