Perhaps beating long-time rival Edison for the third time in a month was asking too much. And so the young Los Alamitos High Griffins basketball team fell to Edison 64-54 in a Surf League tiebreaker game Thursday night at Marina High School.

The victory gave the Chargers a guaranteed CIF Southern Section playoff berth for Edison (19-10, 4-3), but ended the season for Los Al (10-17, 3-4), whose sub .500 season record would not qualify it for a playoff spot.

Aff four teams finished tied for first in the Surf league with each sporting a 3-3 league mark, necessitating a double jeader of tiebreaker games last night. In the opener, Newport Harvor Newport Harbor earned the league’s other guaranteed spot by defeating Corona del Mar. .
