The Los Al Girls softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a 7-7 tie and defeat Camarillo High in a CIF quarter-final match on Thursday.
Ironically, in a game that featured five home runs, four by the Griffins, it was a small ball single by Taylor Johnson that proved to be the game-winner.
Los Alamitos (23-7), the 2017 Division I champion, advances to host top-seeded Oaks Christian in Saturday’s semifinals. Camarillo, the No. 4 seed, finished the season with a 24-4 record.
Thursday’s game was a see-saw affair with Camarillo striking in the bottom of the first with a two-run double. Los Al rallied to take a 3-2 lead, but the Scorpions added four in the third to grab a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the third after a bases-clearing double.
But the Griffins answered again, managing to finally tie it up in the sixth when Malayna Terrones hit a solo homer, setting up the stage for Johnson’s heroics.
