The Los Al Griffins won the opening round of the Corona Del Mar Beach Bash beating Santa Barbara 75-46. Los Al (now 6-2) was led by Daniel Mellgoza’s 12 points and Niko Griset’s 10 points.
Los Al plays Tesoro tomorrow at 7:30pm at Newport Harbor High School. Tesoro, 69-43 winners over Redondo Union, brings a 9-0 record into the contest.
The winner of that game would play the winner of the Edison-Mater Dei contest. Mater Dei downed San Leandro 67-35, while Edison thumped Whitney 68-14.
The Beach Bash includes eight teams in this week’s Orange County top 25: No. 1 Mater Dei; No. 3 Crean Lutheran; No. 6 JSerra; No. 10 Los Alamitos; No. 11 Pacifica Christian; No. 14 Tesoro; No. 15 Edison; and No. 24 Laguna Beach.
Football
Unless you’ve been in a cave for the past two weeks, you are probably aware that the migration of Oklahoma Sooner football coach Lincoln Riley to USC has had some impact on the Los Al football program. Highly touted Griffins de-commmitted from Soonerville-and a few days later unofficially became future USC Trojans (hence the gear in the photo below). Again it’s all unofficial until they become seniors and sign the National Letter of Intent in February 2023, but one definite thing is that they both have another year of Griffin football in their futures.
