GRIFFIN SPORTS: Split decision in Baron-town — Boys BB downs FV, but Boys Soccer falls

The Los Alamitos Griffins Boys Basketball team evened its Sunset League record at 1-1 with a 71-59 road win over Fountain Valley Friday night.

The Griffins,who are now 4-7 overall, had five scorers in double digits with juniors Dave Olcomendy and Kevin Kent leading the way with 16 and 15, respectively.

Micguire Monson added 12, freshman Tyler Mathews scored 11, and sophomore center Everett May put away 10.

After Christmas, the Griffins travel to Florida for the KSA Holiday Classic in Orlando.

In the preliminary matches, the JVs were edged by the Barons 57-56. They had opened their league season with a 56-51 win over marina on Monday, so are now 1-1 in league, 4-7 overall.

BOYS SOCCER: Fountain Valley 2, Los Al 1

A late penalty kick gave Fountain Valley a 2-1 win over the Los Alamitos Boys Soccer team on Friday afternoon.

Fountain Valley scored first, but Griffin sophomore Kevin DeRamos tied it up with a 30 yard rope from just straight on to make it 1-1 at the half.

The loss drops Los Al to 1-1 in league play and 4-4-3 overall. They won their league opener Monday with two overtime goals to down Marina 3-1. Next up for the boys is the annual alumni game at Los Al Monday morning. Then after Christmas they play San Pascual in a first round match of the Oceanside tournament.

In lower level play, the JVs tied 1-1, and the Frosh-Soph fell 2-1. In the latter, Kai Iwasaki had a header goal for Los Al.

Cheer & Song: Long-time Cheer/Song advisor Ramirez honored as “Legend” by Varsity Spirit.

Jennifer Ramirez, the cheerleader advisor for 25 years at Los Alamitos High School, has been honored as a “Legend” in the sport by Varsity Spirit, a company that hosts camps and large-scale cheer championships across the United States.

The company noted “Ramirez has used her leadership skills to help make cheerleading the American phenomenon it is today, according to Varsity Spirit. In her quest to continually expand the sport, she has impacted countless lives and created incredible opportunities for millions of athletes around the world. Congratulations to Jennifer Ramirez – a true Los Al Legend.”
