Football opens season tonight
Despite losing its two top players (QB Malachi Nelson and receiver/DB Makai Limon, both now at USC) , a reloaded Los Alamitos football team takes on a strong Western squad tonight at Handel Stadium at Western High in west Anaheim.
Alonzo Esparza replaces Nelson at quarterback after spending the first two years of his high school career at Culver City and Sierra Canyon. Tight end Davon Mitchell is a transfer from Allen, Texas and is committed to Oklahoma. Defensively, they added transfers Foster Slaughter (Bishop Amat), Josh Touchek (Santa Margarita) and Kamar Mothudi (Campbell Hall). There are other newcomers to the Los Al roster and the OC Registers Steve Fryer notes that transfer paperwork delays may result in some newcomers not being officially cleared to play.
Western (10-2 last season) dominated the Orange League last season and beat its league opponents 227-20 last season. Anthony Luna led Orange County in passing yards by a junior last season and Josh Faulkner had 25 offensive touchdowns.
