Nikki Monninger, who grew up in the Greenbrook neighborhood, and attended St. Hedwig, Pine/McAuliffe and Los Alamitos High Schools and then became a well-known bass player with the alternative band Silversun Pickups, was honored by the Los Alamitos City Council at Monday’s meeting.
Since helping form the band in 2002 Nikki and Silversun Pickups have had 13 singles on the Billboard Top 100, including “Panic Switch” peaking at the number 1 spot. The band received a Grammy nomination as Best New Artist and has appeared on several national television shows including the David Letterman and Jay Leno late night shows. They have also played numerous times at Coachella and other major rock festivals.Â
Monninger graduated from Los Al High in 1992. She was a member of the Cheer squad for her freshman and sophomore years, then joined the song team for her jr and senior years. In her junior year, The song unit won a national championship and got a parade upon their return. Â
Nikki returns to her home base here in Los Alamitos often to visit with her mom who is a neighbor of outgoing mayor Troy Edgar. Edgar, who has served three terms on the city council, retire from Council after last night’s meeting, but his last official act was presenting Monninger with her awards. Â
