Another high school ranking report is out…  (and take these with a grain of salt but still… ) US News and World Report lists Los Al HS as No. 160 in California (out of 1,675 high schools) and No. 1083 in the nation (out of 17,857).

Los Al received an overall score of 93.94, with grades being assigned for the following categories:  number of students taking at least one AP class, students passing at least one AP exam, math proficiency, reading proficiency, and graduation rate.

Over one third of the graded schools on the list were not traditional high schools, but small charter schools, and many others were district-wide magnet schools requiring proficiency exams for entrance.  Such examples would be Oxford Academy in Cypress, and Whitney High in Cerritos, which were the top two-ranked schools in California.

What these ranking also don’t tell you is the number and quality of extra-curricular activities offered, community support, number of students feeling undue stress from pressures of high expectations, and a real indicator of the quality of school experience  – the percentage of students who enjoyed their high school experience enough to want to attend their 5 and 10-year reunions.

The complete article is here.

Some of the local high schools ranked ahead of Los Al were Oxford Academy in Cypress (1 in California, 11 nationally)  Whitney HS in Cerritos (2/25), California Academy of Math & Science in Long Beach (3/32), Troy of Fullerton (25/220), OCHSA (38/273), Palos Verdes (49/360), University (Irvine) (57/431), Northwood (Irvine) (59/435), Cerritos (64/475), Mira Costa (76/559), El Segundo (91/638),  Woodbridge (101/764), Beckman /Tustin (108/796), San Juan Hills (116/844), Fountain Valley  (123/873), Tesoro (127/884), Laguna Beach (133/933), Sunny Hills (134/938), Corona Del Mar (138/956),  and Redondo Union (154/1045).  Ranked behind Los Al were Beverly Hills HS (164/116), Irvine High (167/1137), Garden Grove (177/1190), Bolsa Grande 179/1204), Aliso Niguel (183/1202), Pacifica (185/1247), Foothill (191/1302), Huntington Beach (226/1496), Brea Olinda (258/1745), Kennedy (La Palma) (273/1817), Cypress (277/1838), Esperanza (323/2212), Edison (Hunt.
