It took him just over a couple seasons to do it, but Los Alamitos Griffin Junior Malachi Nelson is now the school’s leader for touchdown passes thrown in a career.

Nelson completed 12 of 19 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns as the Griffins thumped host Huntington Beach 49-14 Friday night, improving their league record to 4-0 and overall mark to 8-1.  The three TD tosses gave Nelson 60 in his two plus seasons at Los Al and broke Kevin Feterik’s career mark of 58, set from 1993 to 1995.  Nelson played some in his freshman season, then had a short six-game season in last year’s Covid-shorted schedule.  But most of Feterik’s sophomore season was on the bench behind Mike Good who led the Griffins to their only perfect 14-0 record and their third CIF title.

Nelson has 31 TD passes this season, putting him in reach of Jimmy Barnes’ single-season record of 37.  Nelson has at least two games left.  Los Al faces Newport Harbor in their regular-season finale next week and then begins the CIF-SS playoffs the following week.

The Orange County Register has the complete story.
