Seal Beach 1% sales tax increase takes effect
It was not an April Fool’s Day joke. Seal Beach’s sales tax went up 1% on April 1. The increase comes after voters approved Measure BB last November to hike the city’s sales tax from 7.75 percent to 8.75 percent. It is obvioiusly too soon to see the impact as the local increase goes into effect. Local businesses are adapting to the new increase. Lisa McHenry, owner of knock knock toys and gifts on Main Street said she spent time reprogramming her cash register and reviewed messages from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.

‘Casino Royale’ event to benefit McGaugh
Local students will be the big winners from Project SEEK’s ‘Casino Royale’ dinner-dance fundraiser which will be held Friday, April 12, from 6:30-11:30 p.m. at Old Ranch Country Club. Around 200 people are expected to attend The Event, as it is called, which is run by Project SEEK, a non-profit run by parent volunteers, is hosting its 9th annual benefit to support art and technology programs at J.H. McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach.

Ongoing and upcoming issues: Durzo parole date; First Street narrowing
The Seal beach Police department has submitted answers in response to a community survey of questions. Among the questions are 1) When will the 2018 part one crime statistics be available? 2) When will former SB rec program director Scott Durzo [sentenced last month to three years in prison for 17 counts related to child sex abuse] , and Will SBPD be notified when he is released? Other questions cover parking enforcement, the red car, organic wast recycling and more.
April 8 is deadline public comment on wetlands restoration plan
Monday, April 8, is the deadline for the public to comment on the 75-page Initial Study Los Cerritos Wetlands Restoration Plan which straddles the Seal Beach/Long Beach, Orange County/Los Angeles County border. In December, the California Coastal Commission approved an application by Beach Oil Minerals, of Long Beach, for new oil production and wetlands restoration project that includes: (1) construction and operation of two oil production facilities, including drilling and operation of up to 120 new wells, (2) construction and operation of 2,200 ft. above-ground oil pipeline, (3) decommissioning of existing oil facilities on two sites,and…
Sun News adds a new member to its sales team
Christi Sterbens has joined the Sun Newspapers team as its newest sales representative. Steven Remery, group publisher for OCNN announced that Sterbens will handle the Long Beach territory for the company. Sterbens graduated from Pepperdine University with a bachelor’s in advertising/marketing. She has worked in sales and marketing for business service-related industries.
