In 1952 two Seal Beach teenagers, Cynthia and Kay Strother (better known as the Bell Sisters — using their mother’s maiden name) took the nation by storm when their recording of “Bermuda” went to No. 1. The girls appeared with Bob Hope, Dean Martin and on many other shows — including the brand new Mickey Mouse Club. Cynthia and Kay, who lived on 5th Street, were attending Huntington Beach High School at the time.
One of their nephews, Rex (son of local realtor, Joanne Russell, who was the youngest of the three Strother girls) has now set up a Bell Sisters page on Facebook. It includes not only some cool shots from their performing days, it also has some interesting photos of Seal Beach in the 1950s. On a side note, their father was instrumental in setting up the Seal Beach Little League (now Seal Beach Kids Baseball).
