In an all Trinity league final, St. John Bosco defeated league rival Servite 18-14 in the finals of the Orlando Scandrick Elite 7-on-7 passing tournament at Los Alamitos High on Saturday, June 26.
Servite and St. John Bosco both went 3-0 in pool play to earn the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds for the 20-team playoffs. The Friars downed Muir, Inglewood and No. 5 Alemany in the playoffs to reach the final while the Braves beat Oxnard, and La Habra before downing No. 2 seed Los Alamitos in a semi-final match-up.
Los Alamitos junior quarterback Malachi Nelson, the state Gatorade Player of the Year, continued to impressed his growing legion of fans and college scouts, frequently hooking up with junior wide receiver/cornerback Makai Lemon as well as junior wide receiver Ethan O’Connor (6-1, 173), who emerged as a breakout performer.
Looking good for the griffins on the defensive side of the field was senior outside linebacker/nickel back Jeremy Guitierrez, and junior corner Kevin Longstreet who made his debut for Los Alamitos after transferring from St. John Bosco.
This was the fifth annual passing tournament hosted by former Griffins standout and Dallas Cowboys defensive back Orlando Scandrick, who is now an NFL commentator for Fox Sports. The tournament, formally presented by Scandrick’s 32 Cares foundation, featured a 20-team lineup with Los Alamitos, Mater Dei, St. John Bosco, Servite, La Habra and Western, plus Alemany, Burbank, Colony, Downey, Inglewood, Loyola, Muir, Notre Dame, Oxnard, Pasadena, Serra, Sierra Canyon, Torrance and Upland.
