GRIFFIN SPORTS: Boys soccer and basketball both notch wins

The Los Alamitos Griffins Boys Soccer and basketball teams both racked up wins over Laguna Beach as the teams resumed Sunset Conference play on Friday.

On the soccer pitch, senior Louie Arrellano slipped in front of a Laguna defender waiting for a high bounce, collected it and slipped the ball into the net to give the Griffins a 2-1 lead they never relinquished. It was Arrellano’s 10th goal of the season.

Los Alamitos got on the board first — in the 10th minute — when a charging Riley Hunsaker partially blocked the Laguna keeper’s attempted clear. Adrian Alcazar chased it down and took advantage of the open net to slide it in for the lead.

Late in the first half the Breakers capitalized on a defensive lapse and made it 1-1 going into the halftime break.

With the win, Los Alamitos improved its Sunset Conference record to 2-1. They finish up crossover play on Wednesday with a home match against Huntington Beach. They begin Surf League play once again had to [play without the services of leading offensive threat Alex Van Steenbergen, who is still suffering from a pulled hamstring suffered just before the Holidays.

Boys BB: Los Alamitos 62, Laguna Beach 52

The Los Alamitos Griffins get back in the win column with a 62-52 home win over the Laguna Beach Breakers. Los Alamitos was led by sophomore huard Kevin Kent’ with 19 points. Juniors Dave Olcomendy added 17 and Edwin La Crosse had 10.

The Griffins are now 2-1 in Sunset Conference play and finish crossover play with a home game against Huntington Beach on Wednesday. They begin Surf League play next Friday at Newport Harbor.
