GIRLS SOCCER: Los Al 2, Hamilton, Az.  0

Tabbi LaParl scored two in 53rd and 59th minutes as Los Al downed Hamilton, Az 2-0 in second round play of the Mater Dei Premier Invitational.  This is a screwy pool play format as all the teams in a pool did not play each other so Huntington Beach (who Los Al didn’t play) ends up in first place in their pool and has a chance at the tourney title.  Los Al, the No. 2 ranked team in CIF, finishes second.  They will play San Clemente Friday at 3pm.   Los Al’s first round opponent, Villa Park (who is not in their pool) upset Mater Dei yesterday to win their pool.  Los Al and Villa Park (6-0-1) played to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday (click the link to watch the game or go to  bottom).

BOYS SOCCER:  Downey 4, Los Alamitos 1

Alex Van Steenbergen put the Griffins up 1-0, but then the Griffins gave up four second half and suffered a 4-1 loss to Downey High in the opening round of the West Coast Showcase.

Los Al continues pool play today, taking on El Toro at 5pm and then faces off against Alisal tomorrow at 11am.

Meanwhile, back at Los Al the Griffin JVs downed Foothill 2-0 in the first pool play game of the Huntington Beach tournament.  Ethan Chheng and Angelo Ciago scored the goals with assists by Kai Iwasaki and Brandon Nguyen.

Boys BB:  Rancho Dominguez 66, Los Alamitos 64

The Los Al Boys Basketball team lost a tough one, falling to Rancho Dominguez 66-64, in their final game of the St. John Bosco-Gahr Winter Classic.  The young Griffins went 0-3 in the tourney and are now 3-6 on the season.

Los Al opens league play on Monday night at Marina.  Because next week is finals week under the new school calendar, the Griffins won’t play again until next Friday night when they host Fountain Valley.   Under the reorganized 8-team Sunset League which splits the league into two 4-team conferences, teams will first play the four teams from the other conference, and then play home and home series against the three teams in their conference. Over the holidays they will play a tournament in Florida.

The complete schedule is here.

GIRLS WATER POLO: Los Al takes on Wilson, 3pm
