GRIFFIN SPORTS: Girls water polo and BB both fall to Mater Dei

Los Al girls teams lost a pair of matches to Mater Dei yesterday.

The Girls water polo team, ranked No. 9 in OC, was outscored 7-3 in the second half and fell to the No. 5 Monarchs 8-5 at the victors’ pool.. The Griffins were ahead 2-1 at half time, thanks to a pair of goals by Katie Dvonch.

Los Al returns to action Jan. 3 with a road match at Santa Margarita.

BASKETBALL: Griffin Girls open SoCal Holiday Classic with tough loss to Mater Dei:

The Los Al girls basketball team fell to No. 1 ranked Mater Dei 74-44, in an opening round game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego, the largest in-season high school girls’ basketball tournament in the West (over 70 teams in 16 pools and eight divisions. They don’t have much time to dwell on it as they play Oaks Christian today at 11 am and Canyon Springs tomorrow at 12:30. Results page is here.

The Boys Basketball team begins play in the KSA Holiday Classic today with a 12:30pm game against Sebring High of Florida. Depending on whether they themselves win or lose, they’ll next play tomorrow at 11 am against either Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, or Jackson HS of Ohio. Brackets can be seen here.

Soccer: Tournaments begin for Boys and Girls teams

Today’s action. Girls soccer plays two pool games at the Excalibur Cup. They open against Steele Canyon this morning and then play Cypress at 6pm.

The Boys also begin play today, traveling to Oceanside for a 3:30 game against San Pascual in the first round of the SoCal High School Classic. If the win they will play the winner of the San Clemente – Santa Margarita match. Other teams in the tournament include Mater Dei, Harvard-Westlake, Torrey Pines and Richmond. They will play either. The boys played their annual alumni match on Monday. Results (as usual) are disputed, but below is the photo evidence of the match.
