GRIFFIN SPORTS: Girls water polo edges Wilson 7-6, girls soccer shuts out PV

The Los Al Girls Water Polo team rallied in the second half to defeat Long Beach Wilson 7-6 in a highly competitive game at Belmont Plaza Pool Friday afternoon.

The Griffins capitalized on three goals in the third period by the Munatones twins, Sofia and Sydney, to tie the game at 5.  Katie Dvonch’s two goals in the 4th quarter and solid team defense sealed the win.

GIRLS SOCCER:  Los Al 3, Palos Verdes 0

The Los Al Girls soccer team, currently ranked No. 2 in CIF Division 1, improved its season record to 9-0-1.  

Sophomore Allysa Mendoza got the Griffins on the board in the first half and then Analisa Gjonovich put away a penalty kick in the 19th minute to make it a 2-0 lead which held up through halftime.  Colby Barnett’s goal in the 64th minute provided the final score.  Tabi LaParl had two assists. 

Los Al opens Sunset league play Tuesday night by hosting Marina.  Game time is 5pm at the Los Al field.   

BOYS SOCCER: Los Al 1, El Toro 1

The Los Al Boys soccer squad tied El Toro 1-1 in a second round pool play match at the West Coast Showcase in Downey.  

Los Al got on the board early (3rd minute) when Alex Van Steenbergen scored with an assist from Adrian Alcazar.  But El Toro tied it up with a goal late in the first half.

The team completes the West Coast Showcase play on Saturday morning with an 11 am match against Alisal. 

GIRLS BB:  Los Al Girls play in 5th place game

The Los Al Girls Basketball team takes on Los Osos today t 5pm in the 5th place game at the Orangewood  Academy Spartan Classic.  Los Al, which lost its first two pool play games against Esperanza and Orangewood before rallying to beat Valley Christian,  takes an 8-3 record into the game.  Los Osos (4-3) lost to Mater Dei and Downey but beat Vista Murrieta.
