Griffins Rugby opens playoffs with 21-8 win over Wilson

The undefeated Los Alamitos High School Rugby Team opened its bid for a second SoCal Youth Rugby title in three years with a 21-8 quarter-final playoff win over Long Beach Wilson on Wednesday afternoon on the old Laurel School field.

The Griffins will now face La Jolla which defeated Carlsbad 42-29 Wednesday. Their semi-final match will be played at Saturday morning at 9am at Vista Hermosa Sports Park in San Clemente.

Against Wilson, Jojo Nuez, Mava Roberts, and Elijah Tuialii each scored a try for the Griffins, with Isaiah De La Cruz successfully his three conversions.

The Griffins brought a 4-0 record into the playoffs, having downed all of its OC Coast League competition: Saddleback Valley 47-0, the Stallions 28-0 (forfeit), Servite 45-7, and Marina 49-12. The top two teams from the White (top) Division’s four leagues all advance to the playoffs.

Wilson had finished in second place in the Los Angeles league with a 3-1 mark, trailing only St. Anthony’s.
