SILENT SKY

Thursday,
Aug. 22 &

Friday,
Aug. 23

Silent Sky is
the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, the astronomer
ahead of her time. It is 1900, and Henrietta has the
opportunity to work at Harvard University as a human computer, one of Dr. Edward Pickering’s “harem,” mapping the stars but receiving no scientific credit. When Henrietta arrives, she is eager to use Harvard’s telescope – the Great
Refractor – but is told that she will not be able to do any
sort of astronomical discovery as she will only log the stars photographed by the men of the department. However, Henrietta
will not be dissuaded, and begins the process of recording the changes in Cepheid stars – a scientific discovery that
has profound and lasting impact on the field of astronomy.  During her inquiry, Henrietta’s relationships strain under
her obsessive work ethic; her sister Margaret, her love
interest Peter Shaw, and her colleagues Annie Cannon and
Williamina Fleming all find themselves pushed aside in favor of a great cosmic mystery.

Financial Aid Information Night

can be a daunting task for students and families. This event will highlight the federal application for student aid, as well as resources for scholarships and private financial assistance.
Presented by Jodi Okun, founder of College Financial Aid Advisors and parent to
two LAHS grads.

California Scholarship Federation @ LAHS

CSF accepts applications twice each year. They will be available for the fall semester near the beginning of school and the spring semester after finals in January.
Membership is based on your grades from the previous semester at LAHS, so freshman are not eligible to apply for membership in the fall semester. Applications can be found and submitted in the Counseling Office or online. You
must apply each semester in order to maintain membership in the club

What do I get out of being in CSF?

Membership in California Scholarship Federation has more benefits than we can count. For colleges, it shows schools that you’re engaged in your community, passionate about helping others, and excelling academically.

But even without the bonus of helping beef up your resume, CSF is still fantastic, as provides you with an opportunity
to meet new people and get in touch with the world around you by providing service to those in need.

NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY

Los Alamitos High School believes all students have the right to attend school, participate in programs and activities, and be free from any form of discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, national origin, ethnic group identification, age, religion,
marital/parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, immigration / citizenship status; or genetic information; the perception of one or more of these actual or perceived
characteristics.

In an effort to establish and maintain a learning environment where all
students can thrive, LAHS takes reports of verbal or electronic act(s) of bullying, intimidation, harassment, discrimination, threat-making behavior and/or act of violence toward another student, based on the above characteristics, very seriously. Incidents of this nature are contrary to what the school and school district believe, and also violate Board
Policy and the State of California’s Education Code. Therefore, any reported act will be fully
investigated, and appropriate measures will be taken in the
area of school disciplinary measures, up to and including suspension
and/or expulsion.
