The Philharmonic Society of Orange County (PSOC) recently donated a Legato Digital piano and stand to The Youth Center’s after-school program. Representing PSOC, Virginia Fraser and Lizzie Schmidt presented the musical gift to The Youth Center staff and volunteers.

A two-year study by researchers at the Brain and Creativity Institute (BCI) at the University of Southern California shows that exposure to music and music instruction accelerates the brain development of young children in the areas responsible for language development, sound, reading skills, and speech perception. The Youth Center has provided musical instruction to local kids for more than 30 years and wants every child to reap the educational benefits that music brings.

“Music is a part of The Youth Center’s programs every Wednesday,” said Lina Lumme, Executive Director of The Youth Center. “With this digital piano, we will be able to put on musical talent shows for kids,” she continued.

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County provides youth education programs that reach 160,000 elementary, middle, and high school students annually free of charge. There are 21 committees located throughout Orange County. These award-winning programs are made possible to Los Alamitos Unified students through the Seal Beach Philharmonic Committee. Prior to COVID-19, members volunteered as docents at the music programs and held fundraisers throughout the year to make these programs possible. Even in this precarious time of COVID-19, PSOC remains committed to enriching students with virtual Youth Music Education programs.
