McAuliffe 8th Grader falls in National Spelling Bee quarterfinals
Jason Khan, the McAuliffe School eighth-grader, was eliminated in the fourth round of the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee Wednesday, misspelling lepper, a horse skilled in jumping. Khan spelled it leper. Our friends at Patch have the complete story. Nonetheless, he was among the 88 spellers from the original field of 234 competing in the quarterfinals. The 14-year-old qualified for the national bee by winning the Orange County Spelling Bee on March 5.
Seal Beach faces a lifeguard shortage (CBS2/KCal)
Just in time for summer, CBS2 News reports that Seal Beach as well as all the local beach cities are facing a shortage of lifeguards for the upcoming beach season.
“We had a horrible turnout for our lifeguard tryout,” said Seal Beach Marine Safety/Lifeguard Chief Joe Bailey. Normally we would get 30-40 people to come and apply — and usually we need to hire 10-12, so the numbers usually work out pretty good,” said Bailey. “This year we had eight people show up to our tryout.”

And finally, it appears a full schedule of summer concerts and performances is a big part of the local return to normalcy.
In addition to the regular city sponsored summer concert series, two other cultural regulars that are returning to the local performing arts schedule this summer
The Band on the Sand pre-4th of July musical concert will return to the sands of the First Street Beach in Seal Beach.
The event, another Covid casualty during the past two summers. returns with a slate of bands and a very convenient overlook so attendees can take advantage of the adjacent Alamitos Bay fireworks spectacular.
The event will be sponsored this year by The Beach House which finally seems like it will be opening after a multi-year battle with the Dreaded C’s – Covid, the City and the California Coastal Commission. The Beach House will be located on the old Rivers End site.
And Shakespeare by the Sea will return to Rossmoor on July 16 and 17 with productions of Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing.
